The Dangers of Mold

February 20, 2016adminBlogNo comments

Mold spores can enter any home or business, through open air through doors and windows or through HVAC systems. In fact, mold is common and poses no risk under most conditions. Although there is no proven link between the existence of mold and a number of health conditions, many professionals recommend erring on the side of caution. Many believe that it has a negative impact on those who already have asthma and other breathing problems and that it can cause the conditions to occur in those who are already pre-disposed to the conditions. Since different species of mold thrive on moisture, it is understandable that removing moisture from floods is a primary goal. One way to do this quickly and effectively is with the drying equipment rentals from Lemarg Rentals.

Stachybotrys chartarum

Also known as Stachybotrys atra, this greenish-black mold grows on materials such as fiberboard, dust, gypsum board, or paper. It is commonly seen where there has been water damage or excessive humidity including that of flooding. Often, the growth of the mold is detected by sight or smell. Some cases of idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage in infants have been connected to the growth of this mold although the connection has not been proven.

One fact that is known is that some people are more vulnerable to mold than others. Exposure may lead to a number of symptoms, including wheezing, skin irritation, or nasal and eye irritation. Those who suffer from COPD are at a greater risk of lung infections such as pneumonia. Some connections have also been linked between respiratory conditions and mold when they occurred in otherwise healthy children.

Preventing Mold

One of the most important reasons for drying equipment rentals is to remove moisture from water leaks or floods. The sooner the water is removed from the home, the less likely mold is to become a problem. With carpets, this means getting all of the moisture out of the rug and the padding beneath or replacing the padding. If the water has compromised the walls or heating and cooling ducts, these need to be addressed as well. Removing the moisture is the single most important step towards preventing mold in the home.

After the Fact

If mold has already begun to grow, carpets and solid surfaces will need to be sanitized. Hard surfaces should be cleaned with a 10% bleach mixture. Professional carpet cleaning services can treat carpets to remove existing mold and prevent future growth.

If a mold problem occurs in your home without a flood or water leak occurring, there is a moisture problem somewhere inside. Getting to the root of the problem and making any necessary repairs to eliminate the moisture in the area is the only way to prevent mold growth in the future.

When you have moisture or water in your home that opens the potential for mold growth, call Lemarg Rentals at 1-855-753-6274 to learn more about our drying equipment rentals and how they can provide solutions to your moisture problems before mold starts to grow.
