What to Do When Your House Gets Flooded

February 24, 2016adminBlogNo comments

A house flood can be devastating. The water can damage furniture, personal belongings, and the structure of the home. Water can contain mud and a lot of contaminants, putting you and your family at risk. The water doesn’t even have to get more than a couple of inches high to cause damage to carpeting and flooring, heat ducts, utilities, and the foundation of your home. Most flooded homes can be restored until they are liveable and sanitary again. Lemarg Rental provides the drying equipment rentals you need to get your house back to normal.

  • Contact Your Insurance – Be aware that many home insurance policies do not cover floods and the damage may not be covered. If it is, have an adjuster take photos or videos of the damage and complete the necessary documents before you do anything to your home.
  • Remove the Water – Although standing water will run out of your home, a great deal of water will be left behind in the carpet, padding, and upholstered furniture. Drying equipment rentals provide you with the professional quality tools you need to remove the last of the moisture so you can begin treating solid surfaces.
  • Deal with the Mud –Some flooding includes mud that isn’t removed with moisture removal equipment. For large volumes, shovel out as much of the mud as possible. A garden sprayer or hose can be used to remove mud from solid surfaces.
  • Disinfect – A 10% bleach solution will kill germs and other contaminants carried in by the mud and water or you can use a commercial product designed to kill germs.
  • Furniture – If it is possible to take upholstered furniture outdoors, this is the best way to ventilate them and get the moisture out. Some items may be too saturated to save. Mattresses should always be thrown away. Wooden furniture made of veneer is not likely to stand up to flooding but most solid furniture can be restored.
  • Wallboards – When contaminated water is absorbed by the wallboards, the affected area should be removed. Plaster or paneling, on the other hand, can usually be saved if the wall cavities are dried with circulated air. If insulation is reached, you will need to talk with a professional contractor to determine the best way to treat the specific type of insulation you have.
  • Electricity – All of the wiring and outlets should be shot off until they can be inspected and repaired by an electrician. The same is true for the heating and cooling system.
  • Basement – If you have a basement, it is almost guaranteed to be affected by the flood. Start by pumping out any standing water over a period of days to prevent a sudden shift in pressure that will lead to cracking and/or collapsing of the walls. Next, rent a dehumidifier from our drying equipment rentals to dry the entire area.

Restoring your home after a flood can be a long and tedious process. Call us at 1-855-753-6274 for the drying equipment rentals that will help you get your home dry and sanitary in the fastest possible time.
